A rich and multilayered world revolving around political intrigue and subterfuge is the stage; a large assortment of characters with varying levels of complexity and motivation is the cast; and a well thought out, multi-stream narrative encompassing all the best elements of space opera adventure stories is the plot. All together, the three novels contained in this omnibus are individually, and together, a great read. Some minor narrative elements did seem a bit rushed, or inserted as a convenience. Especially at the end of the third book; but they don't really take away from the enjoyment of a great book.
Moon is easily one of my favorite authors specializing in tough heroines, and this collection really demonstrated why.

Heris Serrano is a resourceful and relentless character who does not back down.
I read these books (combo volumes in this selection) when they came out as hard bound and had good enough memory to add them onto my kindle. What I recall most is the character of Esmay Suiza who comes into the end of book three in this combo and features in the next two or three books. She is a character who took the lemons that life handed her and made a lemon meringue pie.
I think that Moons' primary demographic might be young adults and maybe young women (neither of which describe me) but Moon also has a strong base for strategy and tactics in space battles. I really like the concept that a ship that could make a micro jump at FTL could shoot itself in the heat of battle . <grin>
I love horses. Spent most of my youth riding. But the whole horse theme here, the learning to ride, the riding the hunt, the relationship between horse and rider, is just too much of an indulgence on the author's part. Like she's writing for herself or maybe an advanced writing class. I expected more, but you can skip over most of it and still enjoy the story because one has practically nothing to do with the other. I'm working my way through the second to see if this improves at all.
As a voracious reader, I hate short books. In short books, there's no time for character development. No time for a complicated plot. No time to acquaint oneself with the environment.
There is no such problem with Elizabeth Moon's books! She absolutely delivers great writing; great plots; great, real, likeable, honorable characters and character development. Her dialogue is lively and believable.
I recommend her books without reservation.
And if you haven't read Moon's 5-book Vatta series, you have a real treat ahead.
There many Authors I like very much, however Elizabeth Moon is special. I love her characterization of real people with real dialogue in her stories. Her characters have real lives alone with their adventures. This book is a collection of three stories Hunting Party, Sporting Chance, and Winning Colors that will grab you into a page turning exercise. If you read this you will most definitely want to continue with the series - enjoy.
I never imagined that a SF writer could not only match, but surpass, some of my top mystery writing acquaintances in the cozy department...but if anyone could, leave it to Elizabeth Moon! A "cozy mystery" is usually known as much for its atmosphere, the details of it setting, as it is for the puzzle or puzzles being solved. In Heris Serrano, you have as able a female protagonist as you would ever desire to discover, but when Moon pairs her up with an elderly rich equestrian spinster with royal ties and a fancy space yacht of her own, the cozy multiplies exponentially. This book has a richness of atmosphere that never detracts from the action; and like all Moon adventures, the layering of conflict seldom allows for an easy place to set the book down. From royal intrigue to piracy to keeping track of whether you're meeting the prince or one of his three clones, to wandering through the world of high-end horse competition and breeding, Elizabeth Moon delivers yet another winner.
I picked up this book because the author wrote the Deed of Paksennarrion which I really enjoyed. Once again we are given a strong female lead in a genre that normally caters to males. I immediately picked up the next omnibus in the series and will continue to work my way through her extensive list of books. Thanks Elizabeth for the new worlds you have offered me!
Beware of the edition.
Story is decent. E. Moon spends a great deal of time on detail and fleshing out the scene. If you want non-stop blasting space opera action...this book is not for you. Strangely enough one thing she does not explain is the basics of her future tech. Another idiosyncrasy is her tendency to not develop her characters. I learned far more about equestrian events than I did about many of the supporting characters.
Now my note on the edition. At time I thought the story was jarring with abrupt changes of scene with poor transition. Then I discovered that like many kindle scans, this one skips paragraphs entirely which makes for an incomplete and at times very confusing read. I'd give the book overall 3.5 stars but I had to drop it to 3 because of the faulty scan.
If you enjoy Moon I would recommend her later works such as the Vatta's War series. If you prefer more tech and politics, then I'd steer you towards Weber and his Honor Harrington series (though I'd stop before At All Costs.) If you want more character development, action, and a grittier style, then I'd suggest Huff and her Confederation series.
A rich and multilayered world revolving around political intrigue and subterfuge is the stage; a large assortment of characters with varying levels of complexity and motivation is the cast; and a well thought out, multi-stream narrative encompassing all the best elements of space opera adventure stories is the plot.
